Now this is just amazing. LOOK AT THIS CAKE! Shazmeen, the cake artisan, is obviously ridiculously talented at cake crafting. While our usual entrants are cake hobbyists, I’m pretty stoked that Shazmeen decided to show off her skills here too! From the artiste: “I’m a part-time cake decorator and this was one of my latest cakes - it was for a colleague’s daughter’s christening and I had an absolutely wonderful time making it! The baby booties are completely edible, as are all the flowers, butterflies and baby blocks. (and the cake of course :)).

here was his feedback:

‘thank you once again for a beautiful christening cake for my lil princess McKayla! The cake was admired by all present at her party for it’s exquisiteness n detail!’”

The lovely Elaine Stephenson made this creative and highly shippable cake! Cake Jars! So, there isn’t a person alive that doesn’t find Ball mason jars charming and awesome, and receiving them in the mail is pretty stellar because after you consume cake, you have beautiful useful jars! Double win. Elaine obviously knows what she’s doing, and for sure knows how to maximize the potential of a cake. A little quote from Elaine about the cake-making process: “It was a lemon cake layered with sprinkles in the batter, which when cooked gave the cake a rainbow effect! Thus I called it “Rainbow Lemon Cake Jars.” I also included buttercream icing for you to eat the cake with. I have never wanted to eat something more than these cupcakes. Amanda Emdin, an Ottawa-based Illustrator (that’s in Canada for all you Americans), made these delicious cupcakes for, I’m hoping, some incredibly grateful friends. Amanda says: “These are Irish Car Bomb cupcakes, based the abrasively-titled cocktail of the same name, which were served to a dozen of my dearest friends this past St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The chocolate cake has a hearty pour of Guinness baked into the batter, and the cupcake contains a Jameson’s-spiked chocolate ganache centre. Cream-cheese Bailey’s icing completes the cupcake.”

Obviously I love cake-giving as a form of gift-giving, and this one is pretty epic. Melissa Infantino made this amazing creation for her boyfriend a while back, which according to her took “over 8 hours in the kitchen sculpting his 06 Mustang GT’s wheel that he loves more than me, into a cake.” That, my friends, is love. Melissa knows about commitment for sure, and probably a good amount about Mustangs after listening to her boyfriend yammer on about his car. You should definitely check out her work, because if she can make cake look like this, imagine what she can do with actual art supplies!

I love that some folks are following through with the out-of-country parameters to this project! Here is a truly lovely looking cake by a lovely “Modern Country Lady” named Bea Van Waes. Her friends Don and Theresa Pritchard sent in this glowing review: “This walnut coffee cake was one of the best coffee cakes we have ever eaten. It is moist, creamy and you can taste the walnuts, the mascarpone and the syrup, it is just superb. The taste of this cake is just like nothing else -it is really delicious. It is moist and sort of gooey and so soft and sweet . A great treat. High recommended.”

I had the pleasure of meeting Ms Courtney Cordaro (@cacordaro) in person when she came to a lecture I gave at Kean University this spring. Had I known she could bake such awesomely moist citrusy delicious cakes I would have kidnapped her and taken her home as my personal baking slave! The lovely Kelley Cassity of Cutie Cake Patisserie sent these AWESOME gluten free cookies! They were much appreciated by our Workshop studio neighbors as one of them is on a gluten free diet and had up to this point not been able to participate in cake eating! The package included decorated shortbread/sugar cookies, chocolate peanut butter cookies, and CoconOat Sugar cookies (my favorite of the bunch). You can pick up some for yourself at her Etsy store!

Received this AWESOME (double underline exclaimation point) Cherry Chocolate Cake with Fudge Frosting and Rainbow Sprinkles from the good folks at Daily Diptych today. I’ll tell you what, I’m usually not a chocolate fanatic (I like it but don’t crave it like I do fruity sugary sweets) but this is the best goddamn chocolate cake I have ever eaten. I could eat the whole thing by myself. It is seriously the moistest cake EVER. Ms. Maggie Hudson and Mr. Aaron Capa, tip of the cap to you. You are two effing good bakers. I’m assuming your photography is as awesome and luscious as this cake, so please, everyone, go to their site!! Nicola over at Twisty Noodle sent me this fun site where you can customize a cake themed coloring sheet! I colored it on the computer because I am a robot, but this would be very fun to print out and color yourself, be you a tiny person or a grown up. Many Thanks to Monica of hola!design for these COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS lemon ricotta cookies!!!! These are definitely my favorite taste-wise so far. I want to ask her for the recipe but if I were her I would guard it with my life. She even popped by in person to drop them off! Unfortunately I was not in the studio yesterday so they were intercepted by Tina (aka Swiss Miss) and when I came in today all but 2 were eaten!! They were obviously a big hit with everyone.
